Ask David: Do I Need to Kill My Ego?

by | Nov 25, 2025

Here’s a question I received from an attendee at an online event:

Q: I feel like I can’t let go of control. Do I need to hit bottom and lose everything before I can kill my ego?

A: It’s good to let go of the idea that the ego needs to be smashed. You’re already the infinite, impersonal Being, so there’s no ego to kill. To whatever degree you’re maintaining personalization, you’re actually keeping the whole show on the road, in terms of the idea that there is this separate ego. There isn’t a separate ego; you’re already fully in your true, infinite, timeless nature.

It just seems like there is because, from moment to moment, you can make the choice to activate the personal mode. And if you activate the personal mode, then you’re animating the ego — you’re animating the sense of that being a separate self, which doesn’t actually exist. It’s like having a part-time job as an actor with a local theater company, where you’re playing a role in a play.

You’ve signed a contract where you say, “Well, I’ll step in and I’ll play that role whenever I get a phone call from the theater.” And you keep getting called on, and you keep showing up, and you’re stepping into the personal mode. Then you’re off doing something else, and then you’re back into the personal mode.

The solution is to tear up that contract of personalization, because you’re the sovereign being. You don’t need to be animating the personal mode or making it so problematic. Sometimes the solution to that can appear quite easily, and as a result, problematic or catastrophic experiences on the human level can often just recede.

The whole purpose of the intensity of these experiences is to draw your attention to the over-investment in personalization. The infinite Being won’t allow you to become too overly invested in personalization, because the further you move into personalization, the harder it becomes and the more difficult circumstances become. You can gauge the degree of investment in personalization by the experiences you’re having. If you can turn the volume down on personalization and align more with effortless Being, then things will resolve.
