Ask David: How do We Stay Connected to Awareness When in Pain?

by | Sep 29, 2026

Here’s a question I was asked at an online event:

Q: When we’re dealing with illness or physical pain, how can we stay open and connected to awareness rather than getting consumed by the pain or discomfort?

A: The ultimate solution in the human experience is to begin to realize that we all remain as the effortless, impersonal being. The human realm is like a little ride. It’s an option—an experience we’re having for a fairly short period of time, really.

Everything in the dualistic realm is trying to convince us that the physical realm is primary, but actually, it’s peripheral. As we begin to notice that effortless being is the foundation, we see that the sequence that evolves from there—the mental, emotional, and physical realms—takes on a different context.

The idea that the physical body is very important and that life is based on the survival of the physical body is a device that the dualistic realm is using to keep us in pain and suffering. But when we begin to experience from effortless being, we see that the physical realm is peripheral, and we don’t take it so seriously. We know that at some point it’s going to end.

The benefit of living from effortless being is seeing that our true, ever-present nature doesn’t go anywhere. Because it’s ever-present, the frequencies of experience that we’re activating or energizing can be experienced on our terms. We begin to realize that we don’t necessarily need to activate pain and suffering.

In fact, solutions in terms of mental, emotional, and physical health are much more available when there is stillness and silence without the turbulence of the emotions. The solutions can come through, and there can be quite miraculous things happening.
Ultimately, the physical body is only a vehicle. I was talking to my mom the other day. She’s 94, and she said, “Oh, it’s funny. I look in the mirror and I think, ‘Who’s that?’” Then she said, “But it’s funny, I just feel the same as I did when I was really young.”

And that’s the paradox, because the aliveness of your infinite nature isn’t affected by anything in the personal realm. The dualistic realm loves us to identify with the mind, the thoughts, and the emotions because we’re energetically invested then, and we’re hopping and jumping around as though it’s really important.

When actually, it’s just very easy to let it go.
