As we identify less with the separate self, emotional reactions decrease. The reason they decrease is that identification is what plugs our energy supply into those emotions.
When we use the personalized mode and say, “Well, I feel fear,” identification becomes a form of consent. Because you are actually the infinite being, you are consenting to plug your energy supply into this sensation called fear. That sensation arises in awareness, and it arises in a personalized sense.
But there is also the option to rest as your infinite, impersonal nature, which is right here and now. Notice the form appearing within this open field, this ocean of awareness, which is impersonal. See it simply as an energy form arising, as a wave arises on the ocean, but recognize it as impersonal. It is arising within this infinite field of awareness rather than arising in you.
That’s quite an important thing to discover because this distinction is the distinction between impersonal awareness, which is effortless being, and the personalized mode. It is the distinction between your infinite nature, your divine nature, and the human realm of experience.
That option is actually there all the time. In any moment, you can either experience in terms of your infinite nature, in an impersonal way, or step into the conditioned mode, where you personalize the experience and say, “Oh, I’m afraid.”
But the more we become familiar with remaining as effortless being and noticing the forms arising within this impersonal, infinite ocean of beingness and awareness, the more the energy supply becomes disconnected.
With any disturbance we’re familiar with, whether it’s fear, anxiety, depression, or any of those things, we’re disconnecting our energy supply from it because it’s only ever our own energy that fuels it. There isn’t any external power source for these disturbances. It’s simply that when we consent to identifying with them, that identification becomes a form of consent. We then have the full experience in a personalized way.
