The mind has three main aspects to it. The first aspect does have a useful purpose, which is taking delivery of the content from your infinite nature. It’s fantastic. That’s the purpose of the mind, really.
And the practical aspect — using it — is also very good. You obviously have a very good mind, and you can use it in a practical way. So that’s also very good.
It’s just that the third aspect is the one we use selectively. Rather than entertaining invitations into low-frequency emotions, which have energetic consequences, we actually make neutrality the lowest level that we go to. But the emotions above neutrality — things like love, compassion, unity, anything which is enhancing in terms of experience — are absolutely fine.
And the personal realm itself is fine because the character is really set free to experience life in the most amazing way. Certain beliefs that have been imposed are not true.
I’ve had a lot of fun with this with people who have no interest in spirituality. I moved back to my hometown a few years ago, so there are characters here that I’ve known since I was really young. One of them is my barber — well, he’s retired now — but he started cutting my hair when I was five and he was 15. He was an apprentice hairdresser, and he’s 10 years older than me.
He’s been a bit of a rascal, really. His marriage broke down when he was in his 50s and he said, “Oh, I don’t think life’s very good now. I don’t seem to have much fun.” He was holding these beliefs.
But the thing is, everyone ultimately is the infinite being. And if we’re holding beliefs, we’re filtering all our experience through those concepts of limitation.
I said, “Well, actually, life can be anything at any age, really.” Because one of the concepts that lots of people buy into is that you can only have certain experiences at a certain age, and that being young is wonderful but getting older is really depressing.
But actually, they’re all just concepts of limitation because life can be anything at any age.
So with my friend, I said, “Well, actually, that isn’t true. It can be anything at all. You just need to be really open to any possibility.” And I could see there was a sort of expansion taking place.
His life really changed as a result of adopting those ideas — that age isn’t something which means anything.
My favorite line in A Course in Miracles is: “Everything only has the meaning we give to it.”
So if we’re saying, “Life isn’t as good as we get older,” or “My experiences have been limited,” or whatever beliefs we’ve subscribed to, we can just delete all of that.
Because it’s like with children: the more childlike the experience can be, the more fun it is and the more potential there is.
Very young children are not holding concepts of limitation about themselves. They just want to have fun.
So they go out and do things, and they switch their attention from one thing to another, and there aren’t these filters of limitation which create all forms of unpleasant experience.
We’d love for you to join us at our online event for a deeper exploration of how awareness can move beyond limitation and into greater freedom.
With love,
David Bingham
