What is Here Before “Me”?

by | Aug 13, 2026

There might seem to be only awareness of a body-mind that’s present, or only an experiencing of everything as a person. You could say there’s a focal point of your individual self.

So why is that?

It’s because there’s a sequence which goes from subtle to gross. It actually begins as being Attributeless Awareness: no forms whatsoever. That’s just simply awareness aware of itself.

The first filter is the body of bliss, which is an infinite field of bliss. Initially, it is an infinite field of awareness with no forms appearing within it. And then the first kosha is the body of bliss. That is an infinite impersonal field of bliss.

The second kosha is called the body of wisdom, which is effortless Being, which is where all forms arise equally and effortlessly. So when we’re knowing as effortless Being, the only way forms can be known equally and effortlessly is if they’re known impersonally. Because as soon as we step into personalization or duality, we’re actually in the dualistic realm. We’re in the mental realm. Therefore, impersonal awareness precedes the mental realm. That’s why it’s quite good to use impersonal language, as a reminder of our ever present, impersonal nature, even in a context which is normally personalized.

So, if we take the body sitting on the sofa, the personal version would be, “Oh, I’m sitting on my sofa.”

But actually, if we look directly, there is impersonal awareness of a body sitting on a sofa. The knowing of the body sitting on the sofa–if we forget the name and everything–but just the direct knowing of the body sitting on the sofa is actually impersonal awareness knowing the body sitting on the sofa.

It isn’t the individual knowing that. The idea of the person knowing the body sitting on the sofa can only emerge in the mental body.

We’ll be discussing this and more in our next online meeting, and I’d love to see you there…

With love,
David Bingham
