The Main Obstacles to Self-Realization

by | Sep 1, 2026

Consistently, there are three main “obstacles” to realization.

The first is the way language is maintaining identification with individuality. The second is the distinction between our infinite nature, which is attributeless, and spiritual experience. And sometimes there’s a feeling of lack of self-worth—the belief that we’re not worthy of realization.

By seeing the simple distinction between impersonal awareness and the personal mode of experience, we are able to decline the invitations into mental identification and emotional turbulence.

The most common “apparent” obstacle is the distinction between our infinite nature, which is attributeless, and spiritual experience. It tends to be that most people begin by seeking spiritual experience. So, “I had this amazing experience.” But it’s necessary to go beyond the idea that realization has an experiential component. Realization is to see that we are the impersonal field of awareness within which all experiences arise.

Sometimes there can be a lack of self-worth, a belief that we’re not worthy of realization. But lack of self-worth is due to adopting thoughts that are being projected into the mind as invitations. Say there’s a thought being projected into the mind: ”Well, how could you ever achieve self-realization? You’re not deserving enough.”

We tend not to realize that we are adopting thoughts which are being projected into the mind. The tendency is to immediately adopt the thought as though it is our own. Then we functioning as though the thoughts and emotions are true, because we don’t realize that they’re being projected in.

So, if there’s a thought which says, “You’re not deserving of love,” which is being projected into the mind, we’ve been conditioned to adopt it immediately and think or say, “Well, I’m not deserving of love.” We repeat the thought as though it is true.

When we stop listening to the mind, we begin to realize our true potential.
